{"id":3121,"date":"2023-09-25T08:00:22","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T08:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.servizisynergos.it\/spirometry-for-workers\/"},"modified":"2024-03-13T14:28:50","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T14:28:50","slug":"spirometry-for-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.servizisynergos.it\/en\/spirometry-for-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Spirometry for workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 fusion-flex-container nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1216.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:0px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Spirometry <\/b>is part of the mandatory instrumental labor examinations and is used to assess the worker&#8217;s respiratory and pulmonary system functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\">Let&#8217;s see together what it is <b>and how it works<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Spirometry: what is it and how does it work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Spirometry<\/b>  is a test used to check respiratory and pulmonary health and is particularly suitable for all those workers who during the course of their duties are subject to harmful substances, who perform their duties in poorly ventilated environments or where there is the presence of, for example, fumes or dust that can damage the respiratory system precisely of those in contact with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>The spirometric examination<\/b> measures both the volumes of air contained in the lungs and the flows, i.e., the rate at which the volumes are expelled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s2\"> <\/span><span class=\"s2\">It is divided into two categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">   <\/span><span class=\"s2\">SIMPLE SPIROMETRY:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">can measure dynamic lung volumes by measuring the amount of air each worker can inhale and exhale from the lungs with maximum effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">   <\/span><span class=\"s2\">GLOBAL SPIROMETRY:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s2\">Instead, it measures static lung volumes by allowing measurement of the precisely global presence of air in the lungs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">How spirometry works<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>Spirometry<\/b> is an examination that is usually performed annually, is noninvasive, simple to perform, and takes only a few minutes. The worker, with the support and medical guidance of the Medical Officer (who is in charge of health surveillance), simply has to blow vigorously inside a tube that is connected to the spirometer: this instrument will record the worker&#8217;s values by comparing them with a reference value taking into consideration age, sex, weight and height.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">The Physician-in-Charge will be able to identify any pathology or even just fatigues that will probably need to be monitored or that warrant specialist investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p6\">When the examination is performed<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Depending on the worker&#8217;s health condition, the environment in which he or she performs his or her duties, or his or her age, <b>spirometry<\/b> examination should be carried out periodically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">The Physician-in-Charge may still require it in certain certain cases, such as:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">   <\/span><span class=\"s2\">at the beginning of the employment relationship;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">   <\/span><span class=\"s2\">upon the worker&#8217;s return after a long period of absence;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">   <\/span><span class=\"s2\">to a possible change of job description;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">   <\/span><span class=\"s2\">if the worker feels that the activity related to his job is causing him respiratory problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The results of spirometry<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>The results of the spirometry<\/b> will cause the Physician to make his or her judgment as to the suitability for the task assigned to the worker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s2\">Based on the values found, lung capacity is classified in different ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">   <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is defined as <b>NORMAL<\/b> in cases where the respiratory system is found to be totally free and in perfect health;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s4\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">    <\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b>OSTRUCTIVE<\/b>, in the case where obstacles are found that prevent normal breathing;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s4\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">    <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is defined as <b>RESTRICTIVE<\/b> where there is the presence of less respiratory flow than normal, with a reduction in lung volume;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span class=\"s4\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"s3\">    <\/span><span class=\"s2\">is defined as <b>MIXED<\/b> when there is the presence of both obstructive and restrictive conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p9\"><span class=\"s2\">Each of these conditions in turn can be classified into LIEVE, MODERATE, SEVERE, and VERY SEVERE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p10\"><span class=\"s2\">For certain categories of workers, keeping tabs on their respiratory health is vital.
